He grew up in Phoenix, started playing basketball in eighth grade after football, and landed his first clean dunk the summer before his freshman year. He went to Independence High School in Phoenix, then took a full scholarship to Glendale Community College.
The nickname came from the Ballislife videos: creative, invented dunks nobody had put down before. In February 2011 the NBA named him one of four finalists in the Sprite Slam Dunk Showdown at All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, after he won the Phoenix semifinal.
A year later, in Orlando, he won the national final — a between-the-legs dunk over two people, blindfolded, in front of judges LeBron James and J. Cole.
Today, I stand before you all as an International Slam Dunk Champion, but before any of that became reality there was a lot of challenges and difficulties I was facing in my life.
